My Body Confidence Journey: Day 40 – You have to change your beliefs to be body confident!
I first came across this app around 5-6 years ago (I think!) when I first had the motivation to really lose weight. Now, as you may know, the point of this journey is NOT necessarily for me to lose weight, it is all about proving that I can be body confident; regardless of my shape, size or appearance.
This leads me onto part of the reason I started this project. Around 5 years ago, I lost more than 5 stone and was the slimmest, fittest and “sexiest” I have ever been. However, I did not automatically feel body confident... In fact, quite the opposite. I felt like people noticed me more, and as complimentary as everyone was, I felt uncomfortable when friends, family and perfect strangers commented on my appearance. I ended up in an on-and-off-again relationship which left me in a really low place, leading to my life spiralling a little bit out of control. This, to me, took away a part of me. I had worked hard to lose weight, I was curvy, slim and had an awesome tan (thank you Bali!), but immediately started putting weight back on when this relationship ended and as I began to realise that I was still carrying the beliefs of “Fat Abby” rather than “Healthy Abby”; as a result of my low-confidence and self-esteem. I then went onto get into a number of other relationships which I knew weren’t good for me… And 4-6 years later, I was back to the same weight I was before I lost the weight. Can you see my point?
Now, I’m sure some of you can relate to my weight-loss story, which is why it’s so important for you to be here with me today…
At the moment, I am the heaviest and not far off the most unfit I have ever been. When I started this process, I felt unattractive and uncomfortable in my own skin. These “feelings” were no different to the feelings I had when I was 19, the slimmest point in my adult life. A month into this journey, and after 40 days of using and sticking to all of these strategies to help me with my confidence, I am now feeling the most body-confident I have felt in years… I would even go as far to say that I am as body confident, if not more so, than when I was 19 and slim. I’m slowly getting to the stage where I can see how irrelevant my weight is, and how my appearance doesn’t need to impact how I feel about myself… Since the only reason it bothers me is where I compare is to someone else. And I am not that “someone else”.
This is where My Fitness Pal comes in. When I lost that weight before, I was counting calories which is not something I am even remotely interested in doing right now. In my opinion, dieting, or counting calories, does not lead to long-term weight-loss success… Let alone a healthy lifestyle with body confidence! The difference is that because I am growing to love myself and my body, I want to take better care of myself and what I am eating… And my ultimate goal is very different. I am therefore going to use My Fitness Pal to track the nutritional values of my food, my mood and how much I exercise (it connects with the Health app on my iPhone). By doing this, I think I will be “turning the volume up” on the crap I am putting into my body and my lack of exercise. If you are at a stage that you want to look after yourself as well, I really recommend you use this app too!
