My Body Confidence Journey: Day 53 – Changing your beliefs with your CHIMP Brain!
The ‘chimp’ is the instinctual, reptilian part of the brain – your “Fight or Flight”. Ultimately, the job of your ‘chimp’ is to keep you safe and out of danger. Unfortunately, though, sometimes your ‘chimp’ gets things wrong and holds you back from doing things that might help you learn and grow. Do you remember Sunday’s video on your “comfort zone”? This is where your “chimp” likes to keep you, because it knows that there is much less chance of danger since your “comfort zone” is comfortable and familiar.
In relation to body confidence, if you have created the identity of the “fat person”, like I did, then your ‘chimp’ will do what it can to keep you in a place where you remain the “fat person”. Perhaps your repeatedly refer to yourself as shy, quiet, plain, big, tall, overweight, or even a “yoyo dieter”… Then, guess what? That’s there your ‘chimp’ will look to keep you. In reality, we cannot live without this part of the brain, because the world we live in isn’t always a safe place.
Simply put, the identities we have created and the language we use to refer to ourselves are just beliefs we have learned overtime. Slowly but surely your ‘chimp’ took this as gospel, and now whenever you try to change yourself – he freaks out – and repeats these “negative” beliefs until you go back to where you started.
But it isn’t all bad!
Using EFT and choosing more helpful thoughts can turn those negative beliefs around, and help you create a new identity, that serves you and doesn’t hold you back!
