My Journey to Body Confidence: Day 1

So, today is day 1. No going back now! It has been quite hard, but I am proud of myself for filming this video. There are days, as a mentioned, that I don’t even want to get out of bed. I started filming these videos whilst in half-term, so I really could’ve hidden in my room all day if I wanted to. But I didn’t… Yay! I do feel a little bit low mood, however, seeing my friend and talking with my mum really helped....
This is LESSON 1....
Talk to someone you trust. Whether it’s your family, friends, your doctor, a charity… Opening up about how you’re feeling can really help you feel less alone. Part of the reason I am feeling a bit low is because I'm tired, but mostly because the weather is changing and I am running out of excuses for wearing jeans and jackets on hotter days. This is why this journey is so important – I don’t want another self-conscious summer.
Finally, I thought I’d take this opportunity to share a little more about my journey to date. As you can see from this project, I do have low body confidence, this is something I have struggled with for as long as I can remember. However, I’d like you to understand that otherwise, I am now a very confident person, as well as assertive and resilient.
One of the reasons why I am sharing this is because I want you all to know that the tools and strategies I am using now, are the techniques I used to improve my confidence, control my anxiety and get in control of my emotions 3 years ago. So, I know they work. I still use them regularly now, but as of today, I am using them to target my body confidence – as this is something I have tried, but never fully committed to before (I am hoping filming myself will help keep me committed).
The other reason is because I don’t want you to be down on yourself because I have the confidence to be sat in front of a camera sharing all of this with you. This isn’t necessarily about me. The fact that you've clicked on this video shows that you are considering making positive changes in your life, which is definitely something to be proud of. The process really takes time. As I said, it took me a lifetime of feeling rubbish and 3 years of hard work to get me where I am today. So here’s LESSON 2: Be kind to yourself. You will get there too. It really is about the journey, not the destination. Yet another reason why I have decided to take you on this journey with me.
I was a very different person when I was a teenager, but in the last 3 years I have changed a lot. I can stand on stage and tell my story quite comfortably now. I can tell people how I feel about situations quite clearly too.
The point of this new journey is for me to improve my body image and self-confidence – as in my opinion, these are different to just “being confident”. I guess I am a walking, talking example of that! I would like you all to understand that you can use the tools and strategies I am using to be more than just body confident. You can use them to improve your self-esteem and self-worth, to get in control of your emotions, to become for assertive… Whatever you like really. But remember, be committed and practice these tools every day. As that is where I have fallen short in the past when it comes to my body confidence. There are days, as I am sure you’ll see, where you really don’t want to do it. But stick with it because you are worth it.
