Since we are focusing on grief and healing this week, we felt it appropriate to talk about what grief is, along with the stages that many (but not all) people experience. According to WebMD, grief is a natural response to losing someone or something that’s important to you. If you ask us, 2020 has shown us that it’s more than just losing loved-ones. Many of us have grieved our freedom, running day-to-day errands, seeing friends and family… The list goes on. You may be asking... What are the stages of grief? A recommended read to build your resilience...“Difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage. The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict.” – William Ellery Channing
This week’s Friday Read’s recommendation is the amazing ‘Resilience: Bounce Back from Whatever Life Throws at You’ by Jane Clarke and Dr John Nicholson. Blurb: This book takes a positive and dynamic approach to surviving whatever life throws at you, exploring the range of skills, attitudes and abilities you need to survive and thrive in difficult times, both personally and professionally. While some people are more naturally resilient than others, the book asserts that resilience is a quality that can be learnt and developed, whatever your stage in life or personal situation. Based on extensive new research, and backed-up with real-life case studies and examples of people who display resilient behaviour (including those who have turned adversity into advantage), the book shows how you too can bounce back from bad times, learning how to take back control, know when to press ahead or cut your losses, and see opportunity where others see threat. What is resilience?“It’s your reaction to adversity, not adversity itself, that determines how your life’s story will develop.” – Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Resilience is essentially the successful adaptation in the presence of risk or adversity (Garmezy, 1986; Luthar, 2003; Olsson, Bond, Burns, Vella-Brodrick, & Sawyer, 2003). Resilience does not mean you are immune to stressful situations rather that you can overcome and deal with them. The truth is, wherever you look, the words in the definition of resilience changes, but the message is the same. Resilience does not mean you don’t get stressed… On the contrary, resilience is built by learning and growing from stressful situations!
