Top Tips for Maintaining Positive Mental Health

Picture
“Mental health is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you are going.” – Healthy Place

This week, we have discussed what mental health is and the factors that may be impacting that of many parents or carers at the moment.

Here are some of our top tips for trying to improve, and to maintain, a good level of mental health:

  • Try to end each day with gratitude! Not just for the people, experiences and things around you, but for all of the challenges (however big or small) you overcame that day. We truly believe that cultivating your gratitude practice is one of the best tools out there!
  • Daily meditation or “time out”, even if you can only manage it before bed or first thing in the morning. Value yourself enough to give yourself some time alone, to reflect, prepare and feel calm.
  • Talk. This one sounds simple, but we understand that it isn’t always easy to talk to loved-ones or pick up the phone when times are tough. That being said, you know what they say, “a problem shared can be a problem halved”. Accept help from those around you, by first sharing what you need.

Do you have the tools you need as a parent/carer to look after your own mental health?

Picture
Do you have the tools you need as a parent/carer to look after your own mental health?

This week, we are focusing on how to manage your mental health as a parent or carer.

Since we defined what mental health is in yesterday’s post, we thought we might explore some of the common reasons why parents or carers may be struggling at the moment. Can you identify with any of these?

  • Lack of freedom to spend time away from home, even just a coffee with friends.
  • Extended periods of time inside.
  • Poor weather limiting amount of exercise.
  • Daily homeschooling (perhaps combined with working from home).
  • Difficulty managing children’s behaviour as they are restless.
  • Poor diet as no time to plan healthy meals.
  • Financial stress due to furlough or job loss/insecurity.
  • Lack of free time to rest or enjoy hobbies.
  • Communication difficulties both in and out of the household.
  • Boredom – what is there to do?
  • Feeling like there isn’t enough time in the day.

Do any of those feel true to you? Perhaps more than one of them?

The truth is, there are hundreds of reasons why you might be struggling at the moment, and this is going to feel different for everyone. Tomorrow, we will share some of our top tips for managing your mental health in a time that has bought many of us immense stress and pressure.

Are you a parent of caregiver? Have you found the last 12-months really challenging?

Picture
Are you a parent of caregiver? Have you found the last 12-months really challenging?

Across HappiMe social media this week, we are going to be focusing on how to manage your mental health as a parent or carer.

Firstly, what is “mental health”, other than a huge buzzword? Well, according to the WHO:

Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.

Ultimately, we all have a level of mental health, just as we do a level of physical health. In order to maintain good physical health, we might eat our greens, exercise and drink lots of water… And looking after your mental health is very similar. You simply need to feed your mind more of what it needs to stay healthy… Like sleep, connection, self-belief, joy and purpose. Does that make sense?

In the coming posts, we'll explore mental health in more detail, as well as sharing useful tips and tricks to help you to stay mentally healthy!

'Confidence: The Secret' by Katie Piper

Picture
‘Confidence: The Secret’ by Katie Piper (plus an extra strategy!)

Before we share more about this fabulous read, we wanted to talk about our final strategies for the week… Helpful thoughts and mantras!

Firstly, what’s the difference? Well, actually, they can be very different!

Helpful thoughts are a great first step towards changing your beliefs. They are NOT super positive, because if you currently believe something like, “I have never been confident”, it’s unlikely your brain is going to listen when you start chanting “I am super confident”. That being said, a small step in the right direction could be reciting something that is equally true but just a tiny bit more helpful, as this is more likely to get your brain on side. For example, “I am capable of feeling more confident”, or “with practice, I could be more confident”. Does that make sense?

Try to check-in with yourself and replace any unhelpful thoughts relating to confidence with this new thought each day and see how your beliefs change. It won’t happen overnight, so give it a go for around a month.

Now, if you rated your confidence at a 6 or above on Monday, your brain might be ready for a super-duper mantra, just like the examples I used in yesterday’s post… Take a look to find out more.

Back to today’s book recommendation.

Katie Piper’s ‘Confidence: The Secret’ is part memoir, part toolkit, and is great for anyone who wishes to feel more confident or wants to improve their self-esteem.

Check it out here.

The Power Pose!

Picture
“A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.” – Mark Twain

Over the past few days, we have been discussing what confidence is and how best to start building it.

Today’s strategy is for those who felt that yesterday’s wasn’t their thing, or for anyone who’d like to try something else too. Remember, do not overwhelm yourself, so try to only implement a new strategy every 2-4 weeks.

Today’s strategy is possibly the most famous… The Power Pose!

As you probably know, HappiMe works with children and young people, and if we introduce this activity into the sessions (normally after 6-8 weeks), they really enjoy it…This tool was even used on Grey’s Anatomy a few seasons ago, just before Amelia Sheppard went into a big surgery!

Stand upright, hands on hips, chest puffed, chin up and legs parallel to your hips. Take a deep breath, smile and recite a short mantra (more on this on Friday) that makes you feel happy. For example, “I am strong”, “I am confident”, or “I am brave”. Try to do this for 2 minutes at the beginning of each day and see if you feel any different after 30-days.

If you haven’t already, we would advise you to go away and read our last 2 posts too.
Remember, there is not a “one size fits all” with these tools, so it’s important to try things out to see what works for you.

How confident are you?

Picture
How confident are you? Could your confidence be improved?

This week, we are focusing on BUILDING CONFIDENCE.

Yesterday we shared what confidence IS and what it IS NOT, so check that post out if you haven’t already.

Here are the first 2 strategies we would like you to try this week:

  • Journaling (with a twist!) – “What’s the twist?” I hear you ask! Our ‘Confidence Journal’ is all about sharing your real thoughts and feelings about specific situations that may have happened that day. We suggest listing every key event, numbering them, then on a separate page writing down all of the things you thought or wanted to say. The point of this is to be vulnerable with yourself, and to learn to trust your own thoughts and feelings.
  • Mirror Work – Once you have written your journal for the day, head over to your nearest mirror and say some of the things you’d liked to have said, as assertively as you can. Speak clearly, smile and allow your inner confidence to shine through. Your voice is so important, so let it be heard.

Don’t worry… We’re not about to ask you to go out and assert yourself with everyone in your life, but these exercises are really useful for getting comfortable with your honest thoughts and feelings, and trusting yourself to share what’s feels most important.

Give them a go and let us know if they help.

What is confidence?

Picture
What is confidence?

Across HappiMe social media this week, we are going to be focusing on BUILDING CONFIDENCE!

This week should be a fun one…

We suggest rating your confidence out of 10 today, then after practicing the strategies we are going to share with you between now and Friday for around 30-days, re-rate it to see if there has been an improvement.

Before we discuss our first strategy, we wanted to share a little more about what confidence is, as there are one or two misconceptions:

  1. Confidence is how you FEEL about YOURSELF intrinsically… Not what other people think of you. Just because Bob said, “she’s doesn’t seem very confident”, it doesn’t mean it’s true!
  2. Confidence has nothing to do with the external world, and everything to do with your own thoughts. If you keep saying to yourself, “I’m not very confident”, guess what? You will never be confident!
  3. Confidence doesn’t mean you’re loud, love being the centre of attention or have to be the “class clown”. Confidence is being brave enough to be quiet when appropriate, to listen, and to share assertively when you have something to say. Confidence works very closely with vulnerability!

So, set a reminder for a month’s time and add your current confidence rating! Don’t be down on yourself if the score isn’t high, it’s a strange time and hopefully you’ll have improved by mid-March.

For your first tool, check out our next post!

Does your child need help focussing?

Picture
Does your child need help focussing?

Over the past few days, we have been offering tools that your child can use to help them manage their mental health better.

Today’s strategy is not a mindfulness technique, but can be amazing nonetheless.

Have you ever played the ABC Game?

This is a fun one, and when used properly, it can help a child get back in control of their thoughts. Ask them to pick a topic they know lots about, something fun like movies, YouTube or cars, then ask them to go through the first few letters of the alphabet to find words that match.

For example, if you chose cars, you could go “A for Aston Martin”, “B for Bus”, “C for cambelt” etc.

This tool shows young people that they can control what they think! Our advice is to use this with older children and teens, as they are more likely to stop when they feel more in control of their thoughts.

Remember, there is not a “one size fits all” with these tools, so it’s important to try things out to see what works for you.
