Across HappiMe social media this week, we are going to be focusing on how to manage your mental health as a parent or carer. Firstly, what is “mental health”, other than a huge buzzword? Well, according to the WHO: Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. Ultimately, we all have a level of mental health, just as we do a level of physical health. In order to maintain good physical health, we might eat our greens, exercise and drink lots of water… And looking after your mental health is very similar. You simply need to feed your mind more of what it needs to stay healthy… Like sleep, connection, self-belief, joy and purpose. Does that make sense? In the coming posts, we'll explore mental health in more detail, as well as sharing useful tips and tricks to help you to stay mentally healthy! 'Confidence: The Secret' by Katie Piper‘Confidence: The Secret’ by Katie Piper (plus an extra strategy!)
Before we share more about this fabulous read, we wanted to talk about our final strategies for the week… Helpful thoughts and mantras! Firstly, what’s the difference? Well, actually, they can be very different! Helpful thoughts are a great first step towards changing your beliefs. They are NOT super positive, because if you currently believe something like, “I have never been confident”, it’s unlikely your brain is going to listen when you start chanting “I am super confident”. That being said, a small step in the right direction could be reciting something that is equally true but just a tiny bit more helpful, as this is more likely to get your brain on side. For example, “I am capable of feeling more confident”, or “with practice, I could be more confident”. Does that make sense? Try to check-in with yourself and replace any unhelpful thoughts relating to confidence with this new thought each day and see how your beliefs change. It won’t happen overnight, so give it a go for around a month. Now, if you rated your confidence at a 6 or above on Monday, your brain might be ready for a super-duper mantra, just like the examples I used in yesterday’s post… Take a look to find out more. Back to today’s book recommendation. Katie Piper’s ‘Confidence: The Secret’ is part memoir, part toolkit, and is great for anyone who wishes to feel more confident or wants to improve their self-esteem. Check it out here. The Power Pose!“A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.” – Mark Twain
Over the past few days, we have been discussing what confidence is and how best to start building it. Today’s strategy is for those who felt that yesterday’s wasn’t their thing, or for anyone who’d like to try something else too. Remember, do not overwhelm yourself, so try to only implement a new strategy every 2-4 weeks. Today’s strategy is possibly the most famous… The Power Pose! As you probably know, HappiMe works with children and young people, and if we introduce this activity into the sessions (normally after 6-8 weeks), they really enjoy it…This tool was even used on Grey’s Anatomy a few seasons ago, just before Amelia Sheppard went into a big surgery! Stand upright, hands on hips, chest puffed, chin up and legs parallel to your hips. Take a deep breath, smile and recite a short mantra (more on this on Friday) that makes you feel happy. For example, “I am strong”, “I am confident”, or “I am brave”. Try to do this for 2 minutes at the beginning of each day and see if you feel any different after 30-days. If you haven’t already, we would advise you to go away and read our last 2 posts too. Remember, there is not a “one size fits all” with these tools, so it’s important to try things out to see what works for you. This week, we are focusing on BUILDING CONFIDENCE. Yesterday we shared what confidence IS and what it IS NOT, so check that post out if you haven’t already. Here are the first 2 strategies we would like you to try this week:
Don’t worry… We’re not about to ask you to go out and assert yourself with everyone in your life, but these exercises are really useful for getting comfortable with your honest thoughts and feelings, and trusting yourself to share what’s feels most important. Give them a go and let us know if they help. If you are a struggling parent/carer, we are currently offering free consultations. Please contact us when you feel ready. Across HappiMe social media this week, we are going to be focusing on BUILDING CONFIDENCE! This week should be a fun one… We suggest rating your confidence out of 10 today, then after practicing the strategies we are going to share with you between now and Friday for around 30-days, re-rate it to see if there has been an improvement. Before we discuss our first strategy, we wanted to share a little more about what confidence is, as there are one or two misconceptions:
So, set a reminder for a month’s time and add your current confidence rating! Don’t be down on yourself if the score isn’t high, it’s a strange time and hopefully you’ll have improved by mid-March. Does your child need help focussing?Does your child need help focussing?
Over the past few days, we have been offering tools that your child can use to help them manage their mental health better. Today’s strategy is not a mindfulness technique, but can be amazing nonetheless. Have you ever played the ABC Game? This is a fun one, and when used properly, it can help a child get back in control of their thoughts. Ask them to pick a topic they know lots about, something fun like movies, YouTube or cars, then ask them to go through the first few letters of the alphabet to find words that match. For example, if you chose cars, you could go “A for Aston Martin”, “B for Bus”, “C for cambelt” etc. This tool shows young people that they can control what they think! Our advice is to use this with older children and teens, as they are more likely to stop when they feel more in control of their thoughts. Remember, there is not a “one size fits all” with these tools, so it’s important to try things out to see what works for you.
