My child can't express themselves...“Feelings are much like waves, we can’t stop them from coming but we can choose which one to surf.” – Jonatan Martensson
In the article we are going to recommend today, the author explains that one of their top 3 tips for better understanding your emotions is to “broaden your emotional vocabulary”. Now, what does this mean? At HappiMe, one of the first things we ask our young people to do is write down all of the words they would use to describe their feelings, emotions and unhelpful thoughts. Then, we work together to try and double the amount of words that are written down… Yes, double! By doing this, we are improving their emotional knowledge and increasing their vocabulary. This, in turn, helps young people to express themselves better. Most of us know that when we are able to talk and share our thoughts and emotions, with the knowledge that the person we are sharing with can then understand how we may be feeling, we are much more likely to feel calmer afterwards… To read more on this, check out Harvard Business Review’s great article. Does everyone experience happiness, sadness and anxiety the same way? What are emotions anyway? For the past 25 years, psychology professor Lisa Feldman Barrett has mapped facial expressions, scanned brains and analysed hundreds of physiology studies to understand what emotions really are. She shares the results of her exhaustive research - and explains how we may have more control over our emotions than we think. Check out this informative TED Talk here. Since we are focusing on anger this week, we wanted to share a brilliant TED Talk that we found last year. In his great talk, anger researcher, Ryan Martin, draws from a career studying what makes people mad to explain some of the cognitive processes behind anger, and why a healthy dose of it can actually be useful.
