The Power of Beliefs: What you think about, you bring about.People with poor time management skills are an excellent example of how a belief can run our lives. Over the years, I have coached many clients who were lousy at time management, as is often the case with small business owners. They rush around telling themselves that there aren’t enough hours in the day, that they can’t get on top of things however hard they try, and that something always gets in the way of them being able to plan their day properly. And it’s never their fault, of course... I learned the hard way that I could teach them every time management tip, tool, and technique in the book, but unless they were willing to work on the belief that caused the problem (i.e. “I am rubbish at time management”), then they would always end up back where they started. Always. Your subconscious can only do what you tell it to do. You command. It obeys.
This is the exact same reason why 98% of people who lose weight, will regain it again. 98%. No wonder the weight loss industry is such a lucrative industry. Dieters change their behaviour in the short term (i.e. eat more veggies, avoid sugar, exercise more) but they don’t change their programming. The belief that made them overweight in the first place – I am an overweight person. And this is also why a similar % of people that win the lottery will be broke again within five years. They will end up with roughly the same in the bank as before they won. Again, they change their behaviour short term but don’t change their belief system. Their identity stays the same – “I am a poor person”. You are where you are right now because of your thoughts and beliefs. You created you. This may be a sobering thought for some. Another way to think about this is to imagine that your conscious mind – the one you talk to yourself with – is like a camera and your subconscious mind is like the darkroom where your pictures are developed. When you talk to yourself either positively or negatively, your camera – your conscious mind – is constantly taking pictures and sending them to the darkroom – your subconscious mind – to be developed. Imagine taking lots of pictures of an overweight person. When you look at them you wouldn’t expect to see pictures of a slim person, would you? Same rules apply. What goes in, must come out! A couple of really important facts here. Firstly, your subconscious mind doesn’t know if you are kidding or serious. It doesn’t know when you put yourself down in jest. It doesn’t know when you are being flippant. Secondly, it doesn’t know the difference between a good belief and a harmful one. It will just create your reality based on what you say to yourself. Its job is to prove that what you say is right. It wants you to be right. Have you noticed that people who say… • I can’t say no – can’t say no? • I am always late – are always late? • I am unorganised – are unorganised? • I am impatient – don’t have any patience? • I am rubbish at maths – are no good at maths? • I never lose weight – never lose weight? • I am not very confident – are not very confident? Get the picture? Just like you can change the programmes on a computer, you can also change the beliefs, programmes and habits in your brain. Book a session and find out how!
